ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Two days after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R, Ky) proposed a plan which would require three separate votes on the hotly debated debt limit prior to the 2012 general election, Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill took to the airwaves to voice her displeasure.
“I think Mitch McConnell, frankly, has lost his mind,” she said.
In an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program, McCaskill accused McConnell of playing politics by crafting a plan to further his own political ambitions rather than stabilize the nation’s economy.
“This is when we’re supposed to show the country that we’re capable of governing, not figuring out the best strategy for [McConnell] to become majority floor leader,” she said. “This is all about trying to take out me and other people in tough states so that Mitch can become majority floor leader.”
Under the McConnell plan, President Obama would be allowed to raise the federal debt limit unless Congress first approved a veto-proof resolution of disapproval. The plan would require three separate votes to do so before Obama runs for reelection next November.
Questioning the need to vote on the issue three times, McCaskill called the proposal “brazenly political.”
“The way he proposed it, it was like putting a big sign around his neck that says, ‘This is all about winning for the Republicans,’” McCaskill said.
