ST. LOUIS (AP) — An off-duty firefighter is being hailed as a hero for rescuing a man whose pickup truck veered into St. Louis’ River Des Peres.
Authorities say firefighter Steve Nienhaus saw the vehicle enter the river Sunday morning, then quickly swam into the water to save the driver who was slumped over inside the truck.
St. Louis Fire Department Capt. Dan Sutter says he doesn’t immediately know how deep the water was, but the roof of the pickup truck was still visible.
The 53-year-old driver was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. His medical status was not immediately known Monday.
Authorities are still trying to pinpoint what caused the driver to lose control of his vehicle.
