ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The owner of Pi Pizzeria is, indeed, cooking up some special plans for the old Del Taco flying saucer building.
“He has a unique idea that is really, really incredible,” St. Louis Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed says. “I think everybody will love it, if he can pull it off.”
An added bonus: Pi owner Chris Sommers, Reed says, is a graduate of Saint Louis University, which just happens to be where the saucer is located.
But, Reed adds that the UFO-like building needs a lot of work.
“Some things in terms of traffic, in terms of sidewalks, would have to happen to really make it a site that is valued by a lot of businesses,” like Pi or Kaldi’s Coffee, Reed says.
He notes that, in his former district of Lafayette Square, buildings in pretty bad shape, some with only three walls standing, have been saved and fully restored.
As for the saucer, developers had wanted to tear down the building and erect a strip mall in its place.
