GALENA, Ill. (AP) — A 75-year-old western Illinois man has been found dead in his car about 12 hours after floodwaters carried him away from rescuers.
The Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Department says Daniel Wegner’s body was recovered from his car Thursday morning in his hometown of Galena.
The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports that members of the department had tried to rescue Wegner Wednesday night after getting a call about a vehicle being stranded in water.
But the rising floodwaters carried Wegner’s vehicle away, and rescue crews couldn’t find him until the next day.
Galena officials say the city received about 15 inches of rain overnight Wednesday and early Thursday.
