MADISON, Il, (KMOX)-A woman was killed on I-55/70 near the Gateway International Raceway this morning, when she was hit by a vehicle while her husband watched.

State Police Trooper Mike Link says 52-year-old Polly Cottrell of Bull Shoals, Arkansas got out of her car to check on the victim of an accident that had happened moments earlier, “As she’s in the lane of traffic another car comes along and swerves to miss the first car and hits the lady.”

Link says it happened at about 6:10, while it was still raining a little. He says there was nothing the Wood River man driving the other car could do, “You’re going approximately 65 miles per hour. You come up on a car in the middle lane with no lights on, your reaction is to swerve real fast. He did not see the pedestrian standing there in the roadway.”

The driver who hit Cottrell will not be charged. The driver involved in the original accident, 22-year-old Allison Cunningham of  Troy, Il. was arrested for driving under the influence and driving too fast for conditions.

    I am a volunteer EMT/Paramedic.
I was at the scene moments after it happened. I performed CPR on this woman. There was two kind nurses that stopped on their way to work to help assist me with CPR. We did our best for this woman but her internal injuries were serious. I hoped and prayed she would make it, and am very sad to hear that she didn’t. Her husband was there and witnessed the whole thing, he was hysterical. I am so sorry for her husband and her family. I am very angry that this 22 year old took this womans life over being an alchoholic. I hope she gets a lengthy prison sentence.
