UPDATE: Coroner IDs Man Killed In Conveyor Belt

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — The St. Clair County coroner has identified a Collinsville man who died from the injuries he suffered when his legs became caught in a conveyor belt.

Coroner Rick Stone says 31-year-old Thomas Wallace died Monday while working at Swansea Building Products Corp. Stone says the cause of death was position asphyxiation.

Authorities say emergency crews were called to the business and rescuers worked furiously to get to the victim and cut him out of the belt.

Wallace was caught in a vertical conveyor belt that’s used to load sand.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been called to investigate the accident. The East St. Louis company makes concrete steps and blocks.

Police say Wallace was a temporary worker.
