CHESTER, Ill. (AP) - A World War II era ship dubbed “the ship that won the war” is open for tours in a southwestern Illinois town this weekend.
The USS LST-325 is docked in Chester through this (Sunday) evening.
Visitors can tour the ship, eye the weapons used on board and see a Jeep used in the movie“M*A*S*H.”
The ship was part of the backup force at Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Capt. Robert Jornlin says it’s called the ship that won the war.
The ship is typically stationed in Evansville, Ind., and tours river cities across the Midwest every year, including Peoria.
About 40 crew members, including World War II veterans, tour with the ship and offer visitors information.
The ship is on the National Register of Historic Places.
