ST. LOUIS (AP) — Two St. Louis-area riverboats lost passengers and money during the last fiscal year.

Metro officials in St. Louis say high water levels on the Mississippi River are to blame for the losses. Metro says the high water cost 54 cruising days for the Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher riverboats. The bistate agency says that led to a $376,000 operating loss.

This fiscal year 76,230 passengers boarded 816 river cruises. The riverboats had 105,887 passengers and 1,022 cruises in the previous year.

Metro spokeswoman Dianne Williams said the cruises stop when river hits a flood stage of 30 feet. Debris in the river and swift currents when suspending cruises.
