Burial Plots Being Sold Off As Economic Worries Grow
ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It looks like continuing economic woes mean the hereafter can wait as people concentrate on surviving the here-and-now.
KMOX News has found that people have taken to trying to sell their burial plots online.
It’s a nation-wide phenomenon that’s being seen right here in the St. Louis area, with the local Craigslist site showing at least a dozen eternal resting places on the auction block.
Russ Guthrie’s out of work and behind on his mortgage, so he needs to sell three burial plots in St. Charles.
“I don’t have no choice,” Guthrie sighs. “I have my mother living with me and she’s in her eighties, and I’m trying to keep this roof over her head.”
One woman in Edwardsville who didn’t want her name made public said she’s selling pre-sold plots so her mother can afford a much-needed operation.
“She has five plots that are now worth probably, I don’t know, at least five-thousand dollars now,” the woman explains, “and so I’m posting them (on Craigslist) for her.”
Once the plots are sold, most tells KMOX News that they’ll probably just get cremated to save money when their time comes.
