CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — A fourth union at Southern Illinois University’s flagship Carbondale campus has voted to authorize a strike.
WSIU Radio reports that SIUC’s union of non-tenure track faculty has signed off on the prospect of a walkout. Eighty percent of members cast a ballot in voting that ended Wednesday, and 83 percent of them agreed to a strike if necessary.
That continent includes head-start teachers and instructors in departments across the campus and world, with some teaching on military bases or satellite campuses.
All four Illinois Education Association-affiliated bargaining units now have given their leadership the power to call a strike at any time.
SIU President Glenn Poshard has said he understands the unions’ frustration but that bargainers need to understand the administration’s financial constraints.
Contract talks continue.
