Part of I-70 to be Shutdown This Weekend

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – An advance warning to motorists: I-70 in downtown St. Louis will be closed in both directions between the Poplar Street Bridge and 10th Street this weekend, beginning Friday night at 8 p.m.

MODOT’s Mississippi River Bridge Project Director Greg Horn says I-64 and I-44 should be used instead, because weaving through downtown will be frustrating.

“We will have a signed detour but that is really for local traffic only. It will go for two miles through city streets and you will hit 12 to 13 signals depending on which direction you are going” said Horn.

The closure is to remove the Howard/9th Street Bridge over I-70. The interstate will be reopened by Monday morning for the morning commute.

When the weekend work is complete, the 10th street ramp will be closed permanently for work in the new Mississippi River bridge.

There will also be disruption for Illinois drivers this weekend. They will not be able to get on I-70 or Memorial drive from the Poplar Street Bridge.
