TISKILWA, Ill. (CBS/AP) — Many residents of a central Illinois town were evacuated early Friday, after a train containing ethanol derailed and several cars exploded.
Initial reports said the entire town of Tiskilwa, which has a population of about 800 had been evacuated.
Twenty six cars of a 131-car train derailed around 2 a.m. Seven to nine of which were loaded with the highly flammable ethanol.
Firefighters have now decided to put out the blaze using foam after nearby tankers started heating up too quickly.
Bureau County Emergency Management spokesman Les Grant says ethanol and two carloads of gain are burning, at this time. That’s why officials aren’t immediately letting residents back into town.
