SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOX) — If you are an Illinois resident, it should come as no surprise that the state has major budget problems, which has force the state of Illinois to adopt a policy of not paying its bills on time. But what may be surprising is which counties are owed the most money.
St. Clair and Madison counties in the Metro-East make the top ten list of counties owed the most money by the state of Illinois.
Businesses, charities, schools and other groups often wait months to get the money the state owes them.
A new breakdown by county shows the state of Illinois owes Madison County $19.4 million and St. Clair County $18.6 million. That’s number 9 and 10 on the list of the 102 counties in Illinois.
At the exact opposite end of the chart is Calhoun County which is owed the second least amount of money by the state; only $249,000.
