Cards Post-Season Run Allows City To Cancel Furloughs

ST. LOUIS (KMOX)-Thanks to the Cardinals World Series appearance, St. Louis city employees will not have to take furloughs this year.

Thanks to additional revenue generated by the playoff games at Busch Stadium, Mayor Francis Slay is canceling the furloughs city workers were scheduled to take this year, “They work hard. They do a great job. I think it’s worth it to us to take this over 2 million, a little over $2 million in savings and apply it to the employees.”

Slay says the furloughs were expected to save the city $2.8 million but he’s not too concerned about the difference, “We thought we’re close enough we want to give the employees the benefit of the doubt.”

If the Cardinals host World Series games six and seven, the city would make about another $900 thousand in additional revenue.

City managers were to be furloughed for two weeks, workers for one week.
