JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) Missouri taxpayers will pay several million dollars to hold a presidential primary next year, but the outcome is not going to make much difference in picking the president.
Missouri Republicans have opted to use caucuses because the Feb. 7 primary is too early under national rules, and the Missouri GOP fears it would lose half its delegates to the national convention. Democrats do not have a contest because President Barack Obama is
running for re-election. Leaders for the Constitution and Libertarian parties say the primary will not affect their contests.
Nonetheless, the primary remains on the books and will go forward. Lawmakers’ attempts to push back the primary failed, and the Senate deadlocked over canceling it altogether.
