Pipe Bomb Discovered in St. Clair County; Safely Detonated

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOX) –  Now that an apparent pipe bomb has been safely detonated, authorities want to know who planted it and why.

This all started with a call out to Bethel Road near Highway 159 in the Metro East just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

A property owner called in to report finding a “suspicious item”.

Police and firefighters from various departments throughout St. Clair County responded to the scene, including Hollywood Heights fire volunteers, the sheriff’s department, state fire marshal’s office and Scott Air Force Base.

Finally a police robot unit was sent in to check out the device and safely detonated it around 11 p.m.

The investigation continues.
