SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, ILL.(KMOX)-The Leadership Council of Southwestern Illinois, Civic Progress and the Regional Business Council releases a study on the value of Scott Air Force Base to the region. That figure, over three billion, up nearly a billion from a decade
The Leadership Council’s Patrick McKeehan says over 21-thousand work at Scott, combined with dependents and retirees, the number impacted climbs to about 75-thousand. He says including the indirect impact, the number soars to 136,399 people. The study shows that over 18,000 retirees live in the St. Louis region and receive benefits from the base, an increase of 30 percent since 2001.
McKeehan says there is speculation another round of base closures is coming sometime after the Presidential election. He says Scott supporters simply have to remain in his words, “vigilant.”
He points out that supporters are also eyeing the deficit reduction measures which include $450 billion in military cuts that are already on the table. More cut could come if the Super Committee doesn’t do it’s job.
Scott AFB continues to be ranked as the third largest employer in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. It has also added new missions as a result of the consolidation that followed the last BRAC.
