ST. LOUIS  (KMOX) – The St. Louis Blues have fired head coach Davis Payne and replaced him with Ken Hitchcock.

The team made the announcement on its website and through social media, Sunday night.

The Blues were off to a 6-7 start this season under Payne.

The 59-year-old Hitchcock has 534 NHL coaching victories under his belt, including a 1999 Stanley Cup title with Dallas. He’s been the bench boss for three teams: Dallas, Philadelphia, and Columbus.

Blues management says Hitchcock will be under contract through the end of the 2012-2013 season.

He becomes the 24th head coach in team history.

Payne sat down with KMOX’s Ron Jacober Sunday morning for his weekly Bud Light Chat.

Free the Opera House now. Your sports and casinos downtown and particularly the never-ending plight of the Blues cant cut it against cities with real downtowns like Kansas City, Dallas, Denver, Memphis, Nashville, Minneapolis and Indy.
Separate the opera house from this mess and open her up big time.
