ST. LOUIS (KMOX)-There’s word of an agreement that will send the question of local control of the St. Louis Police Department before voters as a ballot initiative.
The St. Louis Police Officers Association, Mayor Francis Slay’s office and the Rex Sinquefield founded A Safer Missouri have agreed to put the proposal they worked out during the legislative session, before voters next November.
As part of the agreement, A Safer Missouri will withdraw five proposed constitional amendments it had filed in March, that would have had Missouri voters decide the local control question for both the St. Louis and Kansas city departments.
The new proposal would apply only to the St. Louis Police Department.
If it passes, St. Louis would be able to establish local control in July of 2013. A five person transition commitee would oversee the changeover.
