JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – St. Louis election officials have significantly reduced the number of people registered to vote in multiple places.

A report released Wednesday by Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich found that about 2,400 of the 225,000 registered voters in St. Louis also were registered to vote somewhere else in the state. That’s down from about 15,000 duplicate voter registrations found during a 2004 audit.

Schweich’s audit says the duplicate registrations increase the risk of voter fraud, and the St. Louis Board of Elections should do a better job of reviewing its voter rolls.

In a written response, the election board said it “goes to great lengths to avoid duplicate registrations.” But the board also says that some are impossible to avoid because the database depends on officials in other jurisdictions doing similar reviews.
