ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — St. Louis Cardinals are losing vice president of amateur scouting and player procurement Jeff Luhnow as he will be named the next general manager for the Houston Astros. Multiple reports indicate that Luhnow has informed his co-workers with the Cardinals organization that he has accepted the position in Houston. The Astros have also confirmed the reports.
Under the new ownership of Astros new owner Jim Crane along with president/CEO George Postolos, the Astros were reported to be in search of an individual with the knowledge, skills, and experience to build a competitive franchise through a strong commitment to player development.
As the head of scouting and procurement with the Cardinals since 2006, Luhnow helped the franchise win two World Championships in 2006 and 2011. He first joined the Redbirds in 2003.
Luhnow will be reunited with first baseman Brett Wallace, a former prospect that was in the Cardinals system until he was a part of the Matt Holliday deal in July 2009.
