FESTUS, Mo. (KMOX)-A nighttime janitor at a Festus elementary school is charged with raping a nine-year-old girl over the summer.
Police say 47-year-old Michael Burgess committed the crime at his home and the victim is a family friend.
Festus Schools Superintendent Randy Sheriff tells KMOX, “The accusations do not indicate that any inappropriate conduct occurred on school grounds. The employee actually works in a different building than the student attends.”
Sheriff says Burgess has been with the district for nearly six years and cleared a background check before being hired, “No history of anything like this. No prior accusations. No hints of impropriety of any kind. Just a regular employee that came and did their job and responded to supervision and showed up for work every day and did everything you can ask for in an employee.”
Burgess was suspended with pay when the initial allegations were made on Monday. Sheriff says now that statutory rape and sodomy charges have been filed, he’ll probably be fired.
Meanwhile, Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis is concerned there may be more victims out there. He suggest parents ask their children if they’ve ever been approached by Burgess or if he ever did anything to make them uncomfortable.
