ALTON, Ill. (AP)-  A Metro-East restaurant worker is being hailed as a hero after helping a choking woman on this second day on the job.

Patrick Smith of Granite City is a manager trainee at the Alton Steak ‘n Shake.

He’s also a former nurse who used to work in a hospital emergency room setting.

The 41-year-old tells the (Alton) Telegraph (http://bit.ly/su4KAB ) that a co-worker who knew about his nursing background approached him about the woman choking this week.

Customers and co-workers say a calm Smith deftly performed the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge a piece of food from the woman’s throat.

The woman didn’t leave her name, so Smith says he hasn’t been able to contact her.

He’s currently studying to receive a doctorate in psychiatric medicine from Saint Louis University.
