More Time Given to St. Charles County Tax Stragglers

ST. CHARLES (KMOX) – The bills weren’t sent in the mail on time, and now St. Charles Countians have almost an extra month to pay their property taxes.

An emergency vote by County Council members means those who pay before January 23rd will not be assessed interest or penalties. The County Collector objected to the extension, saying plenty of people still managed to pay before December 31st.

County Executive Steve Ehlmann was also skeptical, saying “there are some people who never intended to pay their taxes on January the 1st, and now they’re going to get 23 more days.”

“I don’t think it’s fair to the people who came in, waited in line and made the extra effort to pay it on time” despite the delay, said councilwoman Nancy Matheny.

But other council members said that elderly residents, especially, relied on getting the paper bills in the mail.

An important note: those who don’t pay by January 23rd will be assessed interest going back to January 1st.
