BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) – A prominent labor union is supporting a former education official in the southern Illinois congressional district once held by Congressman Jerry Costello.
The Illinois AFL-CIO has endorsed Democrat Brad Harriman of O’Fallon, citing his ties to the district and “strong working-class values”. He’s the former St. Clair County regional school superintendent.
The 12th district seat was held for more than two decades by Costello, before the Democrat abruptly retired in October. The district runs along the Missouri border and includes Belleville, Carbondale and Cairo.
Seven candidates four Republicans and three Democrats have filed candidacy. The primary is March 20.
The Republicans include former Belleville Mayor Rodger Cook and Jason Plummer, who made an unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor in 2010.
The AFL-CIO has 1 million members in Illinois.
