SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (IRN) - Illinois’ attorney general has released her annual Top 10 list of consumer complaints, and she has filed a lawsuit dealing with No. 1.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan says consumer debt was once again the top complaint her office received last year. She received nearly 6,000 calls. Madigan filed a lawsuit against Skokie-based debt collector PN Financial, which she says is one of the worst law breakers she has ever seen.
“One of the most egregious things we saw was PN Financial attempting to collect debts that were actually owned by other collection agencies,” she says. “PN Financial didn’t even have the right to collect those debts in the first place.”
Madigan says debt collectors sometimes scream profanities over the phone, refuse to show proof of debt owed, and some even pretend to be attorneys – all of which are against the law.
The 2011 Top 10 list of consumer complaints is as follows:
1. Consumer Debt
2. Identity Theft
3. Construction/Home Improvement
5. Motor Vehicles/Used Car Sales
6. Promotions and Schemes
7. Mail Order
8. Fraud against Business
9. Motor Vehicle/Non-Warranty Repair
