ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — Shortstop Rafael Furcal became a Cardinal Nation fan favorite with his ‘happy flight’ motto following a win before the team would fly to their next destination. Along with his contagious competitive spirit, Furcal will have a full healthy off-season to gear up for 2012 as he and the Cardinals agreed to a two-year deal last December.
“My second home is going to be St. Louis, and I don’t have to jump around, especially when you got a family,” Furcal said about having the new contract.
Acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers on the last day of the 2011 non-waiver trade deadline on July 31, Furcal made an immediate impact at shortstop. His hitting for average (.255) was a little suspect, but did show power by slugging 7 home runs over 50 games.
Before arriving with the Cardinals, the former All-Star shortstop had his health issues with his back and legs. How’s he feeling now? “Yeah, I feel pretty good. After the season, I was so excited to finish the year healthy.”
Furcal also told reporters that he intends to keep his #15 number even though new outfielder Carlos Beltran traditionally wears those digits.
