CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - A southeast Missouri high school teacher is facing charges for allegedly choking a student and causing him to pass out.
The Southeast Missourian reports that 32-year-old Cape Girardeau Central High School physics teacher Roman Smith is charged with misdemeanor third-degree assault.
Authorities say Smith was “play fighting” with the student at a downtown parking lot on Jan. 21. Police say that Smith wrapped his feet around the student’s waist and applied a choke hold that caused the student to lose consciousness.
Smith, who is also a member of the National Guard, does not have a listed phone number. Online records show he does not yet have an attorney.
