Super Bowl
* Great finish to a largely boring game. Glad to see the Giants beat the Pats…again. It’s easy to dislike the Pats but you have to admit that Belichick and Brady are an amazing tandem. Just not when they’re up against the G-Men.
* Enough with the stuff about dropped passes by Pats receivers late in the game. Sure, there were a couple of missed chances but Tom Brady missed badly on a couple of throws as well. The ball Wes Welker allegedly “dropped” might have been a catchable ball for Calvin Johnson but for the 5’8″ Welker it was all he could do to get his fingertips on it. Plus, Brady threw a pass over the middle way behind Deion Branch. If he led Branch on that play it might have gone for 30-40 yards.
* Eli Manning is an elite quarterback but I don’t want to hear any of this mess about him now being better than his brother. Peyton is EASILY the better of the two Mannings. You do not – I repeat, do not! – judge individual players based on team accomplishments. The Giants won the Super Bowl, not Eli Manning. Eli was a key contributor, no doubt, but players should be judged by their body of work not what they did on a limited scale in Super Bowl opportunities.
* Does anyone really think Terry Bradshaw was a better QB than Peyton Manning has been? He has more Super Bowls but come on, that’s just silliness if you answered “yes.”
* What’s this about a Super Bowl halftime show that has people buzzing? I didn’t realize there was such a thing as a “halftime show.” I thought halftime was for bathroom breaks, some form of conversation with other human beings and time to reload the plate with more snacks…
* Why does the Super Bowl choose so many has-beens for the halftime entertainment? I might watch if anyone they put in there happened to be in their prime. I’m not saying that artists like Bruce Springsteen and Madonna don’t still have “game,” I’m just saying their heyday was 20 years ago. Look at the last 10 halftime headliners:
2012 – Madonna (in her prime 20 years ago)
2011 – The Black Eyed Peas (relevant but kinda played)
2010 – The Who (in their prime 35-40 years ago)
2009 – Bruce Springsteen (still rocking but again prime was 20-25 years ago)
2008 – Tom Petty & The Heartbeakers (maybe in the 80′s)
2007 – Prince (again, maybe in the 80′s or early 90′s)
2006 – The Rolling Stones (when I saw them live they were washed up…in 1988)
2005 – Paul McCartney (let’s be generous and say 40 years ago…probably 50)
2004 – Janet Jackson (at least Justin Timberlake was relevant at that time)
2003 – Shania Twain, No Doubt, Sting (all past their prime but 2-of-3 closer than Sting)
Again, nothing against any of these artists. Many are absolute legends. But if you want a really, really good show you need people who are at the top of their game RIGHT NOW. I might pay attention to the halftime show if the entertainers were more Eli Manning than Archie Manning.
Okay, I probably wouldn’t. Just ignore me. They wouldn’t put anyone on there that I like anyway.
* Apparently someone named M.I.A. flipped the bird during the halftime show. Okay, let’s grow up. We’re not in 4th grade anymore. If your kids haven’t seen that gesture yet they won’t know what it means. If they know, well, that means they’ve already seen it so that horse is out of the barn.
If you’re willing to pitch a fit over something like that then you need a flipping vacation. I’m not saying you need to like it, just don’t lose your cool over it.
