ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) – Just as they feared. Leaders of children’s hospitals nationwide and in St. Louis say President Obama’s 2013 budget cuts them to the bone.

President Obama’s 2012 budget eliminated federal funding for pediatric training programs, but Congress restored it to 265 million dollars.

His newly proposed budget for 2013, cuts amount back down to 88 million.

Emmy McClelland director of government relations for St. Louis Children’s Hospital says that’s too much.

“The impact on children’s hospitals nationwide would be devastating. We are now training about half of pediatric specialists and sub-specialists in the United States.”

But McClelland says she’s hopeful that this time, like last time, Congress will restore funding at least to where it was in the last budget.
