ELLISVILLE, Mo. (KMOX)-Police say they have found the mother of the newborn baby who was abandoned in a yard in Ellisville this morning.
Sgt. Nancy Walker tells KMOX the 19-year-old, west county woman was found at a local hospital late in the afternoon. Her name is not being released yet. She is said to be in good condition.
Walker tells us the baby, who they’re calling “Baby Chuck” is doing well. Walker says they’re hoping to raise his core temperature but his color looks normal.
“Baby Chuck” is, for now, named after the officer who was first on the scene, Chuck Kraus. Officer Kraus tells KMOX that when he arrived in the 100 block of Westridge Parc Lane he thought he was coming up on some puppies wrapped in a beach towel, ” It was moving around and as I got closer, actually, a noise that I identified as a baby crying came from the towel. I removed the towel from the baby and discovered him laying there.
“He was cleaned up. He looked okay. He was crying, which was a good sign and moving his arms and legs around which I knew that would have been a good sign.
“We picked him up and got the homeowner who discovered the towel to get us some clean, fresh towels. So she went in and threw us out some towels and we actually put him back of our patrol vehicle so we could warm him up and we put him in the fresh towels.”
Kraus says you’re supposed to expect the unexpected in police work. but “I was completely shocked.”
He adds, “The most important thing is that we got him to a hospital and he’s in proper care and he’s doing okay.”
