ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Three-plus months after the surprising retirement announcement of Tony La Russa, the future Hall of Fame manager has already taken on a new opportunity as a non-uniform consultant with the Detroit Tigers.  Manager Jim Leyland told reporters on Friday morning about La Russa’s new role at the Tigers Spring Training facility in Lakeland, Florida.

According to MLB.com Tigers beat reporter Jason Beck, La Russa will mainly work with general manager Dave Dombrowski, and not work with players or coaches on the field.  Leyland, Dombrowski, and ‘TLR’ all originally worked together while with the Chicago White Sox during the early 1980′s.

Leyland was given the chance by La Russa to stay in baseball after resigning from the Colorado Rockies at the end of the 1999 season as the Pittsburgh-based scout for the Cardinals.  He made his return to managing in 2005 with the Tigers.
