SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOX) — Texting and driving don’t go together. A bill which has passed an Illinois House committee would put the same ban on bicyclists.

State Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) says texting bicyclists are dangerous to themselves and others. “The difference between a bicycle and a car is that you’re not surrounded by a steel cage. Neither are the bicyclists around you. Neither are the pedestrians around you. The risk of harm is very real,” Cassidy says.

State Rep. Dennis Reboletti (R-Elmhurst) says the ban should be a local government decision. “I don’t see why the city of Chicago couldn’t do that right now. The aldermen are competent. They understand what’s happening in their city and they can address that issue. I don’t think we need to affect 13½ million people by taking it statewide,” Reboletti says.

The bill passed the House Transportation Committee.
