UPDATED: Man Critically Burned In Fireworks Plant Explosion
DITTMER, Mo. (KMOX) – The ATF is being called to the scene of an explosion at a pyrotechnics plant in Dittmer Missouri.
It happened shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday at Global Pyrotechnic Solutions on Sunset Drive at Highway Y in Jefferson County.
Three people were injured, one with serious burns over 85-90% of his body. That victim was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur where he was admitted to the burn unit.
Two other victims had injuries that were less severe and they were taken by ambulance to St. Clare Hospital in Fenton.
Workers told St. Louis-area media that they heard a flash explosion on the 180-acre complex. They said the three victims were disoriented but walking and talking after the explosion.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Capt. Ralph Brown says investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the explosion. The ATF and the state fire marshal’s office have been called to the scene to investigate.
The company — known as GPS — has suffered industrial accidents like this before, including one explosion that caused a fatality back in 2000.
