ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - As April 15th creeps ever closer, many families know they can’t afford the hundreds of dollars it often costs for tax preparation.
Laura Scherler, director of financial stability for United Way Worldwide, says that’s where they can step in to help.
“If you earn less than $57,000, you can log on to our website at www.MyFreeTaxes.com and prepare both your federal and your state taxes for free,” she explains.
Those earning less than $50,000 a year who feel they need even more help can visit any Better Business Bureau Income Tax assistance sites, and a trained, certified IRS volunteer will personally help prepare your taxes.
The Walmart Foundation, United Way Worldwide, One Economy and the National Disability Institute’s Real Economic Impact Tour have partnered up to bring free tax preparation and filing services directly to consumers through the MyFreeTaxes program.
The program includes Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Supplemental Nutition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Women, Infants & Children (WIC) education.
Backing the entire effort is a $4.35 million grant from the Walmart Foundation.
