ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - If you’re heading out today to buy a ticket for tonight’s $640 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot, just know that experts say you’re 50 times more likely to be struck by lightning than to be holding the winning ticket tonight.
But that isn’t stopping those who spoke with KMOX Radio as they stood in line, dreams of mega-riches dancing in their heads.
“But a house, buy a car,” one woman speculated.
“Probably buy a new house,” said another, echoing a common theme.
She added, “It’s fun to imagine that you’ve won.”
But those same dour, stick-to-the-facts experts are telling anyone who’ll listen that with one ticket your chances of winning at 1 in 176 million.
Buy ten tickets and it’s 10 in 176 million.
Convenience store clerks says they’re preparing for a last-minute onslaught of buyers willing to put thoughts of such dismally long odds aside for a chance at that big wad of dough.
“We’re going to be slam-packed before the drawing,” one speculated.
The winning numbers will be drawn at 10 p.m. Friday, St. Louis time.
