CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (KMOX) – A Metro-East man is dead from injuries suffered when his small plane crashed in Belmont County, Ohio.

Michelle Rutledge of the Chesterfield-based Wings of Hope charity says 56-year-old Donald Cates of Scott Air Force Base, Illinois was killed Friday night while bringing home a donated plane from Pennsylvania.

Rutledge says Cates will be missed, “Don had been a volunteer at Wings of Hope for a long time. He was a pilot, a humanitarian, and a wonderful person.”

Rutledge says Cates was alone in the plane when it went down.

The FAA and Ohio State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
