Officer Struck by Fleeing Suspect

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. (KMOX) – A man is being held for an alleged assault on a police officer in Maryland Heights.

The 21 year old suspect was pulled over in the 1500 block of roth Hill Drive and questioned about a possible drug violation.

Police say the driver accelerated backwards striking an officer and knocking him to the ground.  The officer fired one shot, hitting a front tire.  The suspect then hit a police cruiser drove off until his car became disabled.  Maryland Heights Police say a large quantity of drugs was found on the scene where the driver was taken into custody.

Other officers arrested the suspect, who is expected to be charged Thursday.   Charges of Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer and Possession of Drugs will be sought.

The officer was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
