Full Moon Viewing at Compton Water Tower

The historic Compton Hill Water Tower is open tonight (Friday, April 6th) to get you a closer look at the full moon.

The 170-foot tower, built in 1898, gives you a 360-degree view of the City. Admission if $5 for adults, $3 for children. The Water Tower Park & Preservation Society will also open the tower on Saturday, April 7th, during the day (and then the first Saturday of each month through November).

There are many stairs and no elevator, but it’s worth the climb!

THE COMPTON WATER TOWER HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN OUR HEARTS. OUR MOTHER AT THE AGE OF 17, BORN IN 1910 CAME TO ST LOUIS AND HELD A JOB AS A DOMESTIC IN THE HOME OF DR. LEO C. MUELLER–ON THE TOP FLOOR OF OINE THE BEAUTIFUL HOMES IN THE AREA, CIRCA 1927–SHE OFTEN QUIPPED–“I COULDN’T BOIL HOT WATER”. OUR FATHER ‘HUNG OUT’ AROUND PARK AND COMPTON–THEY MET. AT THAT TIME (AGAIN) THERE WASN’T A LOT OF MONEY AROUND OR JOBS–THEIR DATES WERE AT THE TOWER ON SUNDAYS–MOM WAS TEACHING DAD THE CATECHISM–HE MADE HIS FIRST COMMUNION AT THEIR MARRIAGE 02/10/1934 AT ST. FRANCIS DE SALES ON GRAVOIS EAST OF JEFFERSON. IT UPSET ME TO SEE THAT IT HAD BEEN DEFACED WITH GRAFFITI. IT HAS BEEN MADE KNOWN TO ME OF A GROUP OF YOUNG MEN EVIDENTLY WITH A LOT OF TIME ON THEIR HANDS, BUT MONEY FOR SPRAY PAINT DOING THEIR ART WORK IN THE CARONDELET AREA, I.E., GRAND AND BATES AREA. THANK THE RESTORATION COMMITTEE FOR THE TOWER RESTORATION AND HAPPY EASTER, BARBARA-G. B. WINDLER CO., INC, FLORIST-A/K/A/ JUNK YARD DOG, BLABBRA AND WHISTLE BLOWER
