MASCOUTAH, Ill. (AP) — Investigators say a southwestern Illinois woman was killed in a car wreck after she’d been celebrating her 21st birthday.
The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department says Rachel Kerwin of Mascoutah was driving early Wednesday when the car went out of control, hit a ditch and flipped several times. Firefighters found her body under the front of the vehicle.
Three other occupants of the car were not seriously injured.
They told deputies they were at a Mascoutah party celebrating Kerwin’s birthday Tuesday night, and that Kerwin had been drinking before driving.
Kerwin’s father tells the Belleville News-Democrat that his daughter graduated from Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville in December with an accounting degree and had registered for fall classes at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville.
