ALTON, Ill. (AP) — An Alton police officer is accused of fleeing two accidents authorities say he drunkenly caused just minutes apart.
The (Alton) Telegraph reports that 39-year-old Christopher Mattila is charged with one count of driving under the influence and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He also faces two counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage.
Investigators in Madison County say both accidents happened Sunday night and didn’t result in any injuries.
Mattila was arrested early Monday at his home and is free on bond.
Mattila couldn’t be reached for comment. He doesn’t have a listed home telephone number; online court records don’t show whether he has an attorney.
Alton Police Chief David Hayes says the 16-year Alton police veteran is now on desk duty.
