Construction Crane Falls at Mercy Hospital

CREVE COEUR, Mo. (KMOX)-One worker escaped with a minor injury when a crane fell over outside Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur late this morning.

Mercy Regional Vice President of Support Services Steve Bollin says the 70 ton crane owned by McCarthy Construction was being backed into a new position when it tipped, “It actually fell across a temporary stone driveway that we’re using to access the construction site. The boom itself fell into an alley way that’s used for trucks to turn around for our dock.”

Bollin says no patients or pedestrians were in the area where the crane landed, “It is not on a sidewalk, it is generally a restricted area. The public sidewalk is several feet away”

Bollin says the crane was being used to install air conditioners, but was not carrying a load when it fell, “It was in the normal position that they put it in when the reposition it.”

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
