BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A retrial is under way in southwestern Illinois for a man accused of fatally shooting a village’s mayor. The Belleville News-Democrat reports that a jury was seated Monday in St. Clair County in the first-degree murder trial of 36-year-old Aaron Jackson.
A judge last October declared a mistrial after a key witness changed her testimony about whether she talked to an investigator at the scene of the 2010 killing of Washington Park Mayor John Thornton.
That witness also claimed the investigator offered her a bribe. Prosecutors contend Jackson shot Thornton three times in the chest as the 52-year-old mayor sat in his car. They theorize Thornton was headed home from his sanitary district job when Jackson flagged him down to ask for money. Jackson has pleaded not guilty.
