JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (KMOX) – That scaled-down version of the Whistleblower Protection Act passed the Missouri house. The latest version only protects employees who report or refuse to carry out illegal acts and it limits the amount of punitive damages they can receive if an employer retaliates. The sponsor is republican representative Kevin Elmer.
“We are trying to balance the rights of individuals along with a right to earn a living and a right for businesses to operate in the state” said Representative Elmer.
It’s not what the democratic minority wants:
“It’s specifically about whether whistleblowers who speak up against monsters should have protection or be silenced” said Columbia Democrat Steve Webber.
The legislation now goes to the senate.
