ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -  A new study of religious membership in the United States shows just how many St. Louis-area residents belong to a faith group.

According to the 2012 Religious Congregations and Membership Study, the current population in the St. Louis metropolitan area is 2.8 million.

The report finds that 1.3 million of those residents claim membership to a specific religious group.

That’s roughly 49% of the population, equal to the statewide average for Missouri.

In Illinois 55% of residents say they’re part of a religious group.

Broken down by county, Monroe County Illinois has a 63% of religious adherents, St. Louis and St. Charles Counties 52% each, St. Clair Co. Ill. 50%, Madison County 48%, St. Louis city 46%, and Jefferson County 37%.
