YMCA Cabin Fire in Metro East Considered Suspicious

BELLEVILLE, Il. – Another fire in the Metro East, this time near the YMCA in Belleville.

Smithton Fire Chief Mike Schutzenhofer says crews responded to the fire at about 4 am Friday. The structure was a small wooden cabin used by YMCA groundskeepers in the summer. He called the cabin a total loss.

As to whether this is tied to a string of other suspicious arson in the area, Schutzenhofer says he doesn’t know, but the St. Clair County Sheriff is investigating. This fire is similar in that it was a small, remote building with no one in it, and investigators are calling the cause suspicious.
