“Marvel’s The Avengers” scored another record-setting weekend in North American ticket sales with $55.1 million, giving it a staggering 3 week total of $457.1 million. “The Avengers” is breaking new ground for sales and profits in the movie business, and will most likely become a template for other new movies on the horizon who want to capture the same financial success.
The new film “Battleship” plowed through some rough seas at the box office and managed only $25.4 million, well below expectations.
Sasha Baron Cohen’s new comedy “The Dictator” underperformed in its opening weekend with $17.5 million, giving it third place. “Dark Shadows” came in 4th with $12.8 million.
The new domestic comedy ”What To Expect When You’re Expecting” finished a disappointing 5th with only $10.5 million. For a complete listing of all the box office results from the weekend, click on the link below.
This upcoming Memorial Day weekend marks the official start of the summer movie season. Opening that long weekend is “Men in Black III,” which will most likely topple “The Avengers” from the top spot on the weekly box office totals.
