ALTON, Ill. (AP) – The mayor of Alton plans to honor jazz great Miles Davis with a statue.
Davis was an Alton native. He was born in the southwestern Illinois city in 1926 and later moved to East St. Louis.
Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst announced plans for the statue Saturday night at the 2012 Miles Davis Jazz Festival. Hoechst says the plan is to put a life-sized Davis statue in the heart of downtown Alton’s entertainment district.
Miles Davis Jazz Committee Chairman Abe Lee Barham says the statue is in the planning stages right now.
The (Alton) Telegraph (http://bit.ly/JgwuQp ) reports that the committee will ask artists to submit sketches before commissioning the piece. There’s no word yet on how much the sculpture will cost.
Davis died in 1991.
