Dr. Sharmon Wilkinson Picked as New Clayton School District Superintendent
CLAYTON, Mo. (KMOX) – The School District of Clayton Board of Education voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Sharmon B. Wilkinson as the District’s next superintendent of schools. In addition to removing the “interim” from her title, the Board approved a new, three-year contract for Wilkinson beginning July 1, 2012.
With this action, the Board acknowledged that they would not be conducting a superintendent search next year.
There is no need to go looking for the District’s next leader as they have already found her.
“After having the opportunity to work together in her role as Interim Superintendent over the past year, we believe that a national search would not lead us to a better candidate than Dr. Sharmon Wilkinson,” explained Board of Education President Jane Klamer. “She is well known for her years of strong service to the
Clayton community and continues to impress even those who already know her with her professionalism, sound judgment and work ethic.”
Klamer went on to note that the Board’s goals for this year were significant and that not only had Wilkinson completed the needed work but that she has also put the District in a good position to move that work forward. Klamer further explained that Wilkinson’s demeanor, abilities and commitment to the District have earned her the full confidence of the Board of Education.
“Like Dorothy Gale, the Board had to go on an odyssey in order to realize that everything we wanted has always been right here at home,” Klamer said.
Wilkinson has been a key administrator in the District since 1996. She served as Interim Superintendent for the 2011-2012 school year after the previous superintendent, Dr. Mary Herrmann, asked to be released from her contract. Prior to this year, Wilkinson served as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Student Services.
“I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to continue to lead a school community that I have had the privilege of serving for the past 16 years,” said Wilkinson. “It has been stimulating and challenging to work for our students in a new capacity. I look forward to continuing those efforts and collaborating with the Board to serve the best interests of our students, staff and community.”
Before to coming to Clayton, Wilkinson worked for seven years as Director of Human Resources for the Special School District of St. Louis County. She has also worked as a special education teacher, supervisor and human resources supervisor in Ohio and Michigan. A graduate of Michigan State University, she holds a Masters of Educational Administration from the University of Dayton and received her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Saint Louis University. Wilkinson’s contract, which was signed last week, runs through the end of the 2014-2015 school year. Her salary is set at $205,000.
