FAIRVIEW HEIGHT, Ill.(KMOX)— State Police say an erratic driver slammed into the back of a highway crew doing striping work on Interstate 64, killing one worker and injuring two others and the driver of the car.
Trooper Mike Link says two of the victims, including one who died, were helicoptered to SLU hospital. The driver of the sedan was taken to Belleville Memorial hospital .
Killed was 48 year old Dennis Beard of Pocahontas.
Eyewitness Rick Urban, an aerospace engineer on his way to work, told KMOX News he observed a black Honda weaving through traffic and passing cars on the shoulder before it crashed into the highway crew.
“He was severely impaired by something,” Urban said, “He was not under control at all, and it didn’t look mechanical at all. It looked like somebody who was messed up.”
Urban says he got out of his car and witnessed the aftermath of the crash. Two highway workers were pinned between the Honda and the back of their truck.
State Police say the workers were employed by Briteway Striping Services of New Baden, Illinois.
